Common Injuries after a car accident
Mild to Severe Brain Injuries
One of the most common types of injuries after a car crash is brain injuries. Traumatic brain injuries, commonly called TBIs, may be caused when a driver or passenger forcefully hits their head on the steering wheel, dashboard, or any other part of the vehicle because of the collision from the accident. Interestingly enough, a lot of brain injuries or concussions are caused when the driver or passenger hits their head against the airbag when it opens in a collision.
The severity of the TBI may depend on the impact suffered by the victim. In some cases, the injury may not be immediately apparent which is why anyone involved in a truck accident in Los Angeles should remember to watch out for the common symptoms.
Some of the symptoms that are commonly observed with TBI’s are headaches, dizziness, memory loss, or confusion. In more serious injuries, the victim can also suffer seizures.
Traumatic brain injuries from truck accidents can be as minor as a concussion. Victims of more serious truck accidents, however, can suffer from long-term symptoms and disabilities such as cognitive and emotional problems and loss of motor skills.
Unfortunately many people involved in accidents will not immediately recognize the signs of brain injury. Instead they may think that they have simply suffered a shock or are stressed out from the trauma of being involved in a crash. This is why we often recommend people that have been involved in any kind of car accident to immediately seek medical attention. Only a medical doctor can properly diagnose a brain injury by administering a series of tests as well as ordering either a CAT Scan or an MRI. If you’ve been involved in any type of accident on California roads, never self-diagnose yourself – always go to the emergency room or an urgent care.

Car accidents can result in violent crashes where shattered glass and sharp metal can fly everywhere. That is why it is not surprising that wounds and lacerations are some of the common injuries that victims can suffer as a result.
The wounds and lacerations that a person can suffer would depend on the severity of the truck accident. In minor truck accidents, minimal lacerations may be caused by the crash. If the truck accident, however, is more serious in nature, victims may suffer more severe lacerations that may include soft tissue or muscle damage. In some instances, the lacerations can be so severe that it can cause permanent disfigurement of the victim’s body.
Whiplash
Much like other vehicular collisions, whiplash is one common injury that can be suffered by a person involved in a car or truck accident. Whiplash is a neck injury that is caused when a person’s neck or head forcibly bends back and forth as a result of a truck colliding with the person’s vehicle.
The extent of this kind of injury can vary depending on the impact of the truck accident. A minor collision between a truck and a passenger vehicle can result in minor and localized pain in the person’s neck. In the case of more serious crashes involving trucks, however, it may cause loss of range of motion as well as extreme pain along the neck and arms.
Bone Fractures
Car accidents can often be violent – for example in cases of rear end accidents or collisions with trucks. One of the most common injuries in these serious accidents is broken bones.
The impact of a car colliding with another car or truck can cause passengers to be slammed forcefully against the inside of the car. In some instances, the force of the collision may cause the passengers inside to be ejected out of the vehicle.
Fractures can range from simple hairline fractures, which are small breaks in a person’s bone, to more serious ones. In destructive crashes where trucks are involved, compound fractures can be fairly common. A compound fracture is a kind of fracture wherein the bone actually pokes through the person’s skin. In some extreme situations, the fracture can even be classified as a comminuted fracture which is when a person’s bone is broken into at least 3 pieces.
